First Grow Time to Birth Cakes? - Mushroom Cultivation (2024)

So its my first grow and I am on the fence on whether it is time to birth my cakes or not. It has been around 30 days (give or take 2) and the jars have been at this point for a week now without any further growth of the mycelium upwards. A jar or two also have started to produce a few little pins. That being said:

1. Do they look fully colonized/consolidated?

2. I left a 1/2 in at the top as a barrier but would a cake shrink enough that the start of the barrier would be lower in the jar now?

3. Am I correct in my thoughts that the pins would be fine after a couple of more days (if necessary) and the dunk n roll process?

If they have been colonized like that for a week, then I would say yes. And don't worry about the pins, thy will be fine.

you can't really tell if something is consolidated by looking at it as far as i know... but once you reach 100%, consolidation usually follows 5 days to a week after.

If they are producing pins then they are consolidated and ready to fruit.
