Are deer blinds worth it? ›

Ground blinds can be very effective just about anywhere if they are set up right. Deer, like humans, prefer the path of least resistance. For this reason, when choosing a spot to set your blind up, you need to think funnels.

If you primarily hunt alone, hunting blinds intended to fit one person don't need to be much larger than 4'x4' or 4'x5'. For two hunters, a larger surface area, such as 4'x6', 5'x5' or even 5'x6', may be more comfortable.

Putting up a ground blind for bow hunting only days before hunting sends a red flag to deer in that area that something is up. They have little time to become accustomed to this “new” object in their territory. Ideally, you want to deploy your blind more than a week before you plan to hunt out of it.

Wear Dark Clothes

Most quality blinds are designed with a dark or black interior. It is important to match this interior which, in most cases, means wearing dark camouflage or all black. Before running off to the store to find brand new black hunting clothes, check your current camouflage jackets and gear.

Most importantly, you must remember that no ground blind is 100% scent-proof, so always practice comprehensive scent control.

A hunting blind floor mat should be lightweight enough to make it easy to transport, and it should be made from a material like foam, turf, or other material that will provide cushion and comfort to the days of hunting the blind will provide.

What researchers have found is that deer can see colors, though they don't experience them in the same way we do. They can pick out short (blue) and middle (green) wavelength colors, but they're less sensitive to long wavelength colors such as red and orange.

Brushing-in the blind is critical to success when hunting whitetail deer. The better you brush it in, the more relaxed deer will be. It is less of a problem if you can erect the blind a month or more before hunting, allowing deer to accept it, but even then, I advise extra concealment.

The slightest unusual movement will result in deer leaving the area. To help minimize movement, the hunter should wear black clothing on the upper body, hands, and head. By wearing black, the hunter blends with the interior of the blind, keeping them more concealed.

Most expert whitetail hunters agree that a span of 3-6 weeks is needed for deer to get used to hunting blinds.

Will a blind spook a deer? ›

A blind is likely an unfamiliar object to a deer, which is reason enough to avoid traveling in that area. Deer and other animals need time to get used to it, so set it up well before the season begins — three to six weeks should be ample time.

The trick is to be within range of whatever trail or food source you're hunting, while staying as far out of a deer's field of view as possible. If you know where deer are most likely to approach from, try to place your blind off to the side of that area rather than directly in front of it.

Brightly colored flagging can help deer avoid contact with the fence​. Flagging should be in the blue to yellow spectrum and attached at waist height in 3 foot intervals along the fence. These colors are recommended as deer have dichromatic vision and do not process the color red, orange or pink as well.

Their color vision is limited to the short (blue) and middle (green) wavelength colors. As a result, deer likely can distinguish blue from red, but not green from red, or orange from red. Therefore, it appears that hunters would be equally suited wearing green, red, or orange clothing but disadvantaged wearing blue.

Although white light is best for illumination at night, most hunters know that a white light will likely spook and scare away the game being hunted. This is the reason most hunters choose colored hunting lights such as red, green or even blue and purple.

Disadvantages. Make human scent and movement at ground level easier for game to detect. Offer limited visibility and shooting lanes.

Ground blinds have windows that give you a limited view, but because deer don't tolerate movement and noise at eye level, you must avoid the urge to peek out closed windows, especially behind you, because this allows light to enter the blind, which can expose you to any deer watching the blind.
