This classic homemade coleslaw recipe is easy to make, feeds a crowd and doesn't cost the earth.

Why is this our best homemade coleslaw recipe?

Say farewell to store-bought slaw. Our best coleslaw recipe is a cinch to pull together. Its perfect balance of crunch and creaminess makes it the ideal side for a BBQ (and our food editor also loves it in a fish taco!) The secret ingredient in this particular coleslaw recipe is horseradish cream in our creamy coleslaw dressing, which gives it extra bite without making it spicy (so yes, it's still kid-friendly).

Recipe Notes

What is a coleslaw mix made of?

A classic coleslaw mix is made of finely shredded cabbage and grated carrot. For some extra colour, flavour and texture, thinly sliced onion, shredded kale, beetroot, bacon, pickles and chopped herbs can be added to the salad.

Is coleslaw healthier than a salad?

As coleslaw ingredients often include creamy, mayo-based dressings, it is higher in fats than a regular green salad. However, try swapping the mayo dressing with some yoghurt, shred some kale, beetroot, cabbage, broccoli and other nutrient packed veggies for a super healthy slaw. One of the classic summer salads, this easy recipe is one you can make healthier with some simple swaps.

What is the difference between coleslaw and slaw?

Coleslaw refers to a salad containing shredded cabbage, while slaw can be made with various shredded, raw veggies such as a carrots, broccoli and kale.

Why is it called coleslaw?

Coleslaw comes from the from the Dutch term koolsla meaning 'cabbage salad'.

What is the dressing made of in coleslaw?

The dressing is typically either a vinaigrette or mayonnaise based. To get that perfectly balanced, creamy, acidic zing, coleslaw dressings contain mayo, vinegar, a sweetener such as honey and a kick of mustard.

What do you eat coleslaw with?

The creamy tang of coleslaw pairs well with burgers, pork ribs or chicken or beef sausages.

Note: If making this recipe ahead, dress the coleslaw just before serving so the cabbage and carrot stay crunchy.

What's in our creamy coleslaw dressing?

Our deliciously creamy coleslaw dressing combines horseradish cream, lemon juice, whole-egg mayonnaise and dijon mustard. While many coleslaw recipes will use sour cream, celery seeds and apple cider vinegar (or white wine vinegar) in their dressings, we find horseradish cream does the job of all three at once - and then some! The tang of this coleslaw dressing teamed with fresh red cabbage and grated carrot makes this homemade coleslaw recipe one we return to time and time again. Better yet, it's an easy coleslaw recipe, which makes it our team's favourite coleslaw recipe.
